Chapter
I
INTRODUCTION
A.
Background of the Study
Bad
words will always be bad. There
are just some times that strong feelings just suddenly attacks people,
whenever people got shocked, surprised, or hurt, and sometimes we
accidentally burst bad words. Neither accidentally or intentionally,
everyone knows that saying bad words is very disrespectful manner, and
swearing tends to turn into a bad habit.
From
one article that I've red entitled, “Is swearing bad manner?” by
Trent Armstrong in quickdirtytips.com. He said that whenever we hear
someone swear, we feel like offended and we are starting to have bad
impressions with that someone who swear, which is also same with
ourselves, whenever someone heard us swearing, lets always take
concerns about what would people think about us.
Trent
Armstrong said that “When looking at the manners of swearing, we
need to think about what kind of impact our words are having. Using
curse words can make you feel powerful, but this kind of language is
defensive and belligerent. And if you use profanity to make someone
feel bad, you are completely missing the point of manners in the
first place. Manners are about putting someone before yourself and
making him or her feel important. Swearing at or near someone will
usually have the opposite effect.”
Everyone
knows that swearing is a huge bad influence specially for children.
We
teach them that it is a bad and disrespectful manner. But why is that
there are adults who don't want any kid who use bad words, but these
adults keeps on swearing in front of them, so who's fault is it?
In
the article entitled, “Will Swearing Harm your Child?” by Ronald
E. Riggio in psychologytoday.com where Ronald said that swearing can
harm feelings of anyone, specially for children. Because swearing is
like a physical aggression. Bad words has nothing a specific meaning,
but whenever we hear these words, we create lots of harmful meaning
which turns offensive.
Ronald
Roggio said from his article that "when we hear a young child swear,
we assume that the child lacks discipline, and a swearing child might
suggest to us that he or she is a bully or a “bad influence” on
other children. Swearing might indicate a lack of discipline, or it
might just be related to a more open and free-speaking home
environment.”

Cursing
or swearing is a sin. They
said that every time you say bad words, it affects God's feeling. We
may not know what these bad words really mean, as I said before, bad
words has no specific meanings. It is just us who creates and defines
what bad words means.
In
the article entitled, "Is cursing or swearing a sin?" by
Jared Wellmen, he explained that bad words have lots of meaning that
we can't exactly explain, but whenever we hear bad words, it is
offensive right? Which means every time you swear, you could hurt or
harm someone's feelings which now explained that you have sinned. And
swearing is transgression of the law and rebellion against God.
Wellmen
said “We can conclude that from the biblical definition of sin, our
overview of cursing, and Scripture’s many expressions on the use of
our tongue that it is without question a sin to
curse.”(http://carm.org/cursing)
Swearing or saying bad words is always determine as a negative thing
for everything, said that it is a sin, bad influence, and nothing is
good about it. But there some article that says that
sometimes swearing is good, that saying bad words has a good
effect for them.
People
would always thought that bad words will always be bad, considered
that swear words could harm or offend someone that you told with, you
might lose their trust and start to have bad impressions from them.
This research paper will change people's perspective, discuss about something that people don't think about swearing, and it will help them to realize that they can be comfortable whenever they swear because it is actually normal with people.

B.
Statement of the Problem
This
study aims to answer this question:
1.
In what ways will benefit the people when they swear?
C.
Significance of the study
People
who get stress easily. There are lots of people who work
hard, think a lot and other stuffs that could make them stress
easily. And this research paper will give them a little tip of
relieving stress and pain.
People
who feel bad about their self whenever they swear. Sometimes,
we don't actually intend to say bad words, we drop these awful words
accidentally whenever we got shocked, surprise or suddenly got hurt.
And this research paper will tell them that there is nothing wrong
about it, that it is normal to accidentally swear.
Future
researchers. There are already studies about swearing. And
as the researcher of this study, I observed that most of the articles
about profanity or swearing were said that it is really bad no matter
what. This research paper could help them to be inform that swearing
is not only about bad manners, negative habit or anything that people
never thought of about swearing.
D.
Scope and Delimitation
This
study focuses on the good side whenever people swear, intentionally
and/or accidentally. The researcher will attempt to change everyone's
thought about the bad things in swearing which most people believed
that no matter, bad words will be bad.
Since
everyone already had an idea how bad is swearing, the discussion in
this study, will be more specific, either being agree or being
disagree with them.
E.
Materials and Method
The
information that were been used for this research paper were mostly
came from online articles. But the researcher makes sure that the
articles she's been reading are real and has proofs. That these
articles are well explained through either physiological or
scientific. In this study, the researcher will prove that swearing is
not that bad all the time, a proof will show them that there are
possible ways that swearing has also good sides and could benefit
them.
Chapter 2
DISCUSSION
I. Reasons why people swear and how it benefits them
A. People get hurt.
When people get hurt, it just suddenly leads them to drop swear words, because swearing is just the best way to release the pain and to express the strong painful feelings they felt, and sometimes it cannot be controlled. People use swear words to emphasize their emotion reaction. People would choose to say “fuck” or “shit” rather than simple words such as “holy cow” or “omg” because swear words has a greater level of releasing anger.

In the article entitled, "Why do we Swear?" by John Grohol in
psychcentral.com. It is said that people sometimes accidentally swear because
of suddenly strong feelings and sometimes, it's intentionally, and it is the
people who choose what words to use and when depending in our surroundings.
Might be intentionally to make your friends laugh, or to offend someones'
feeling.
John Grohol said "Swearing is like using the horn on
your car, which can be used to signify a number of emotions" (http://psychcentral.com/blog/archives/2009/03/30/why-do-we-swear/)
People will never thought of that sometimes swearing is good for them and it helps them. Releasing stress and pain, where were a study in the Kelee University in England, where a psychologist, Richard Stephens asked college students to immerse their hands as long as they can, and some of them had less pain and endured longer when they swear while their hands are immersed. And this study were proven many times.
It is also said that saying bad words is good for you, it may serve an important function in relieving pain. They discussed about a study of Richard Stephens, a psychologist of Keele University in England where they asked college student to immerse their hands in cold water. And according to their results, the 67 volunteer students had less pain and endured about 40 seconds longer. But how come? They said that our brain and emotion is involved with this. The more we swore, the lesser the pain we feel.
As Frederik Joelving explained, “How swearing achieves its physical effects is unclear, but the researchers speculate that brain circuitry linked to emotion is involved. Earlier studies have shown that unlike normal language, which relies on the outer few millimeters in the left hemisphere of the brain, expletives hinge on evolutionarily ancient structures buried deep inside the right half. One such structure is the amygdala, an almond-shaped group of neurons that can trigger a fight-or-flight response in which our heart rate climbs and we become less sensitive to pain. Indeed, the students' heart rates rose when they swore, a fact the researchers say suggests that the amygdala was activated.”
B. Power
and Control.
Since everyone thought of swearing is bad, and knowing that whenever someone swear, it means they gone mad. And that is where the point of everyone will be frighten with that person who swear. And it gives that person a power and control over a bad situation.
Since everyone thought of swearing is bad, and knowing that whenever someone swear, it means they gone mad. And that is where the point of everyone will be frighten with that person who swear. And it gives that person a power and control over a bad situation.
In the article entitled, "Hell yes: Reasons for swearing" by Neel
Burton in psychologytoday.com said that when a person is mad or very mad, it
tends him/her to swear because swearing is one of the best way to release
strong feelings inside of you which people wants to express it with everybody
else, which that is why others may be frighten with that person who's very mad.
Neel Burton said that "Swearing can give
us a greater sense of power and control over a bad situation. By swearing we
show, if only to ourselves, that we are not passive victims but empowered to
react and fight back. This can boost our confidence and self-esteem, and also provide the impetus for further corrective
action to be taken. As Mark Twain put it, 'When angry, count to four; when very
angry, swear" (http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/hide-and-seek/201205/hell-yes-the-7-best-reasons-swearing)
Whenever people heard of someone swears, they're scared that the situation get worst if they don't follow or give what that person wants. that is why whenever a person shows how mad he/she is by swearing, they easily get what they want.

C. Humor.
There are just people who always make fun with everything. such as serous situation where there are someone who's swearing and everyone thought of how very mad that person is, but hilarious people could turn that serous situation to fun and crazy situation.

From the article entitled, "Why do we swear?" by John Grohol in
psychcentarl.com. It is said that people sometimes use swear words
for entertainment, for a group of friends, they use bad words in their
conversation to be more socialize to each other, they play for it, as like they
are pretending that they are fighting, but just joking and using it to
emphasize more the simple words they usually use which turns humor for them,
but of course it only effects for the group of friends who understand each
other.
Grohol said in his article "Swear words can also be used in a
more positive manner, in the form of jokes and humor, sex talk, storytelling,
self-deprecation or even social commentary" (http://psychcentral.com/blog/archives/2009/03/30/why-do-we-swear/)
People use bad words to make fun with their friends, and it benefits them because it is entertaining. if some people take swearing seriously, well then some people use it for humor.

D.
Non-violent Retribution.
When in a bad situation, everyone expects that there’s a fight will goes on, but sometimes, people just use swear words to defend their self, to show expression of anger. Which turns good. Instead that people would fight using their wrists to punch their enemies, people would just throw bad and offensive words to their enemies.

From the article entitled, "Hell yes: Best reasons for swearing" by
Neel Burton in psychologytoday.com. It was said that people knows how offensive
these bad words are, that they thought of swearing could hurt them emotionally
which is more hurtful than hurting them physically.
Burton said that "Swearing can also serve as a
warning signal or as a marker of rank and authority, a bit like an animal's
growl" (http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/hide-and-seek/201205/hell-yes-the-7-best-reasons-swearing)
E.Feels Better.
When people are stress, irritated, or get hurt, swearing actually helps them to feel better. there are study that has proven when people scream, it helps people to feel good, but shouting bad words can make people feel better. Bad words doesn't have exact meaning, but everyone knows that swearing is bad, and sometimes people attempts to do something even they know it's bad, that is why it feels better because you're against of something you should not do.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND
RECOMMENDATIONS
SUMMARY
Mostly from the articles that the researcher red were the negative effects when people swear.
1.swearing is a sin, every time a person say bad words it says that that person who swear is rebelling against Christ.
2.Swearing gives people a bad reputation. whenever a person swears people who heard of that person receives bad impression and less respect because people might think of that person is less educated and doesn't know what are the good manners.
3.Really bad for children. there are no parents who want their child to be influenced of swearing, because people who will hear their child swearing will assume that they were never thought of good manners by their parents, and parents don't want to be a bad influence for other children.
However, there are some articles that the researcher had red that includes good effects whenever people swear, which this paper will be focusing on the benefits that people would get whenever they swear.

CONCLUSIONS
Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions are drawn:
1.When people get hurt, swearing could help them to release pain, there were a study where college students asked to immerse their hands on a cold ice water while swearing, and the pain was decreasing and it was proven.
2.People could have the power and control when they use bad words.
3.Swearing sometimes is funny. Bad words are not bad all the time, because for every group of friends, swearing is always part of their conversation which turns funny instead of offensive.
4.Swearing avoids physical injures. People use bad words when they're arguing with their enemy because they thought of that bad words are very offensive that could hurt their enemy more than hurting them physically.
5.Swearing makes people feel better. Everyone knows that swearing is bad, that is why some of them don't use it, but some of them use it because they are just bad as they are, which makes them feel better because they are against of something that is not right.

RECOMMENDATIONS
This research paper make suggestions/recommendations for the following:
1.For the everyone who get stress easily, most of them can't handle of what is bothering them, but swearing could help them releasing their stress and whatever that bothers them.
2.For everyone who feels bad whenever they swear, because others will think of a bad impression for whoever swears, but this research paper will prove to them that swearing is okay specially on the time that it really needs.
3.For the future researchers, this paper will help them that swearing has already proven that there are good effects for people who use bad words.
